Sing songs together
This will make the journey shorter and will stop the quarrelling in the car, but more importantly, research has shown that singing releases your feel-good endorphins in the brain.
Take a walk
This is one of the best activities to do together as a family when you’re on holiday and a sure way to relax even the most tightly wound. Even a walk as short as 15 minutes will have a calming effect.
Stand on your head
Bringing the head below the level of the heart, otherwise known as inversion, will immediately calm a stressed child and has a restorative effect on the autonomic nervous system, which controls the body’s response to stress.
Push the wall over
Let your child try and push over the wall for 10 seconds, repeat a couple of times. This is perfect for when the weather is bad and you’re stuck indoors while energy levels are going through the roof! The process of pushing against the wall allows the muscles to contract in a futile attempt to bring the wall down, then relax, releasing feel-good hormones into the body.
